PADDINGTON BASIN MASTER PLAN
WESTMINSTER
The Merchant Square master plan completes the remaining four acres to the north east face at Paddington Basin. The master plan includes 130,000sqm (1,400,000sqft ) of mixed use development around the basin. A new major public plaza strengthens the relationship with the basin and with the surrounding urban area to the east and west.
This master plan uses fully integrated public art and incorporates opportunities for sustainable development. The guidelines set out the opportunity for a collection of six architecturally diverse buildings with mixed uses including, retail, restaurant, leisure, commercial and residential and sets out distinctive plots allowing flexibility and phased development. The plot organisation increases permeability and connectivity with linkages from North Wharf Road and Harbet Road to the basin, connections to the North Westminster school site and to the existing underpass across to Paddington Green. The central event space is at the heart of the development zones and follows the pattern of the new north/south routes. The master plan encourages increased open public space with direct relationships to the water space environment.
This master plan offers the opportunity for exemplary urban and architectural design within the western quarter in London.
